:: WORLD WIDE ON MOTORBIKE
It is commonly said People have ideas. But the reverse " Ideas have people " was true for the young Engineers of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) - Mr. Sunil Thawani & Mr. Aniruddha Guha. The year was 1983. It was in the staff canteen of Plate rolling mill that the idea of Traveling Around the World on Motorcycle was born. Everybody thought it was a joke. Many thought these two young guys, bubbling with energy & enthusiasm , were a bit crazy. But when Mr. Nimai Kumar Mitra, Managing Director of BSP gave the green signal, the small sleepy town " woke "to the reality, started taking them seriously & offering help. Since then there was no looking back - series of approvals from various Government & non Government agencies, arranging passports not only for self but Motorbike also, selecting the " right " motorcycle, the route avoiding extreme weather conditions, places of interest and stay, sea crossings, visas, training to repair motorcycle, arranging finances/ sponsorships, medical coverage, bank guarantees and on and on it went till the parents, friends and relatives gathered to see them off on a one year odyssey on wheels.

Ultimately the D - day came on the morning of 8th May 1984 where in Mr. N.K.P.Salve, Hon'ble Minister of Steel & Mines flagged off Sunil & Aniruddha from the head quarter of SAIL, New Delhi, India and hundreds gathered and cheered to wish them bon voyage. Slowly the duo, riding an Indian made Rajdoot Yamaha 350 cc motorcycle moved forward on their one year long journey through 4 continents.

In their one year adventure on wheels "The World Wide on Wheels 1984 - 85 for Friendship and Fraternity " - Sunil & Anirudha traveled through Egypt, Western Europe, USA, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Japan and South East Asia covering 50,000 kms. on road through 23 countries over Atlantic and Pacific oceans and finally returned home to a tumultuous welcome in Bhilai and finally completing their journey in New Delhi on 24th April 1985. They were welcomed by Hon'ble Ministers of Steel and Mines Mr. K. Natwar Singh and Mr. Vasant Sathe.

During their one year venture met thousands of people, made hundreds of friends, won few prizes in motorcycle rallies in Belgium and Switzerland, honored by ordinary people, journalists, television crews, Indian missions, Government & non Government organisations including meeting the then Prime Minister of India Mr. Rajiv Gandhi on 3rd May' 1985 at his official residence in New Delhi.
